Who Are School Governors

Governors are volunteers who work in partnership with school Headteachers to ensure that children receive the best education possible. For maintained schools this is reflected in the law, which states that the purpose of maintained school governing bodies is to 'conduct the school with a view to promoting high standards of educational achievement at the school'.  Governors represent the largest volunteer group in the UK and are selected from a variety of backgrounds to reflect the many interest groups within our schools.

What Does The Governing Body Do?

The governing body's main role is:

a) Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;

b) Holding the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance management of staff; and

c) Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.

The Governing Body Of Banstead Community Junior School

Banstead Community Junior School has four types of Governor.

  • Staff governors, elected by and from the staff of the school.

  • Co-opted governors, chosen by the rest of the governing body.

  • Parent governors, elected by and from parents of children at the school.

  • Local Authority (LA) governors, appointed by the governing body.
